Frequently Asked Questions

What is it like to work with a naturopathic doctor?

At your first naturopathic visit, you will have a conversation with your doctor about your health concerns. Your doctor will discuss all facets of your current health concerns such as physical symptoms, past medical history, diet, lifestyle and mental/emotional factors such as stress. At this visit, your doctor will review any lab work you've already done and determine if further testing is necessary. They will explain the self-healing process of naturopathic medicine and the role as your teacher and guide to return your body to balance. This visit could take up to 90 minutes.

At the end of the visit, your doctor will compile a list of initial recommendations based on your goals and health priorities.

The recommendations might include:

  • Lifestyle changes: Healing should involve the entire body; your doctor might suggest exercise and/or movement for the mind/body to reduce stress and enhance the body's ability to heal.
  • Nutritional modifications: There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all diet. If there is a specific dietary approach you would benefit from—whether related to the gut, autoimmune or hormone—your doctor will thoroughly explain what changes need to be made.
  • Supplement recommendations: Your doctor will make recommendations based on your symptoms or lab results; will implement some natural therapies and other modalities as required.
  • Lab work: The goal of naturopathic medicine is always to identify the "root cause." Lab work can be a helpful tool in uncovering where the imbalance lies but is not always necessary.
  • Referrals: If your doctor feels you would benefit from the evaluation of a specialist, they will make the recommendation during the course of the treatment. It could involve a massage therapists, physiotherapists, chiropractors or osteopaths whose modality might provide adjunctive healing.

First Follow-Up:

This visit will evaluate your treatment plan discussed at the initial visit. Your doctor will assess your response to your treatment plan and refine any prescriptions as necessary.  Any additional lab work will be thoroughly reviewed as well. This visit can be 30 minutes to an hour.

Subsequent Visits:

The doctors typically see their patients every 2 to 4 weeks until symptoms are resolved, modifying your treatment plan according to symptoms and possible additional lab work. Your doctor will determine which interval is appropriate for you,  fine-tuning your health journey for optimal results. These visits will typically take 30 minutes.

On-Going Care:

After your immediate concerns have been resolved, we suggest periodic check-in visits to maintain the success you’ve achieved and address any new concerns. In addition, your doctor might periodically recommend re-checking particular lab parameters if necessary.

The key differences between naturopathic and conventional medicine are the philosophy of health and the therapies used.

The conventional medical system generally addresses and treats the symptoms of the disease by using pharmaceutical therapies or surgery.

On the other hand, naturopathic doctors (NDs) treat patient wholistically by addressing individual health, family history,  environment, lifestyle, attitude, and emotional aspects. It allows naturopathic doctors to find and treat the cause of the disease using a variety of therapies such as lifestyle modification, botanical medicine, TCM, homeopathic medicine, etc.

Although naturopathic medicine is not covered by OHIP, many extended healthcare plans provide coverage for naturopathic medicine consultations and acupuncture treatments performed by a naturopathic doctor.

Please, contact your extended health provider to determine if your benefits package includes coverage for naturopathic medicine or acupuncture performed by a naturopathic doctor.

Naturopathic doctors are trained in pharmacology to ensure there are no negative interaction between supplements and pharmaceuticals.

Naturopathic doctors are open and happy to collaborate with your other healthcare practitioners, for a team approach and in the  patient's best interest.
